UltraWater Filtration: Much More Than a Standard Water-Ionizer Filter
UltraWater is different. It combines several filtration technologies and specialized media to address a remarkably broad range of drinking-water contaminants while allowing beneficial dissolved minerals to remain in the water—minerals that are important to the ionization process.
Designed Around U.S. Water Quality—not Simply "Made in the USA"
AlkaViva did not bring its filter production to the United States simply to put a "Made in the USA" label on its filters. The more important issue was control—control over the filtration media, filter design and manufacturing process so the filtration could be developed specifically around the remarkably varied water-quality challenges found throughout the United States.
Rather than simply relying on the standard filters commonly supplied with Asian-manufactured water ionizers, AlkaViva began designing and manufacturing its own water-ionizer filters in Reno, Nevada in 2008. The company recognized that filtration designed for water conditions elsewhere in the world did not necessarily address the same contaminants encountered in American water supplies.

Different filtration media perform different jobs. The strength of UltraWater comes from combining those technologies so that chloramine, heavy metals, organic chemicals and other difficult contaminants can be addressed in different ways rather than expecting one simple carbon filter to do everything.
Filter performance also depends on more than what ingredients are placed inside the cartridge. Water has to make sufficient contact with those materials. AlkaViva's manufacturing methods are designed to increase surface area and contact time, giving the filtration media greater opportunity to interact with contaminants as the water moves through the filter.
The result is not simply a carbon filter with a few extra ingredients added. UltraWater is a deliberately engineered multi-media filtration system designed for broad contaminant reduction while preserving the water's mineral content.
Then AlkaViva Put UltraWater Through an Unusually Demanding Test
UltraWater was subjected to unusually demanding independent laboratory testing against 249 drinking-water contaminants. This was not ordinary tap water. Laboratory technicians deliberately created highly contaminated challenge water containing heavy metals, PFAS, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, herbicides, VOCs and industrial chemicals. Where EPA maximum contaminant levels existed, starting concentrations were prepared as close as possible to those limits.
The contaminated water was then passed through the UltraWater filtration system at 3 liters per minute, replicating the flow rate and contact time of an AlkaViva H2 Series ionizer. The testing was performed in NELAP-accredited laboratories to EPA standards, and the vast majority of the contaminants tested were reduced to non-detectable levels.

ND means the contaminant was not detectable at the laboratory's specified reporting limit. It does not mean absolute zero.
Heavy Metals
UltraWater testing included 21 heavy metals and related elements. Aluminum, antimony, arsenic, beryllium, boron, cadmium, chromium, chromium VI, copper, iron, lead, molybdenum, mercury, nickel, selenium, silver, thallium, vanadium and zinc were reduced to non-detectable levels in the reported testing. Barium and manganese were also reduced to very low levels.
PFAS / "Forever Chemicals"
Six PFAS compounds were included in the laboratory testing. PFHxS, PFNA, PFOS and PFOA were reduced to non-detectable levels. PFBS and PFHxA were reduced to extremely low residual concentrations.
Pharmaceuticals, Hormones & Personal-Care Contaminants
UltraWater was also tested against dozens of prescription and over-the-counter medications, hormones and personal-care contaminants. The test list includes substances such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen, carbamazepine, amoxicillin, fluoxetine, atenolol, diazepam, estradiol, estrone, progesterone, testosterone, caffeine, triclosan, DEET, parabens and BPA.
The vast majority of these compounds were reduced to non-detectable levels in the laboratory testing.
Pesticides, Herbicides, VOCs & Industrial Chemicals
The testing also included dozens of pesticides and herbicides as well as 87 volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds. Many were reduced to non-detectable levels, including the widely used herbicide glyphosate.

How UltraWater Filtration Works

UltraWater does not depend on one filtration material. Different media perform different jobs, and the combination is what gives the filter its unusually broad contaminant-reduction capability.
Sediment Shield
An electrostatic polypropylene spun-fiber layer provides a mechanical barrier that helps capture sediment before the water reaches the more specialized filtration media.
BioStone Booster
UltraWater uses NSF-certified CaSO3 slow-eluting bioceramic media designed to target chlorine, chloramine and certain heavy metals.
Specialized Carbon, Zeolite & Silver
UltraWater uses NSF-certified carbon that is catalyzed and combined with additional filtration materials. Natural zeolite contributes additional heavy-metal reduction and ion-exchange capability, while silver helps inhibit bacterial growth within the filter between uses.
AlkaViva uses both loose-bed carbon and compressed carbon-block applications. Its carbon blocks are sintered and compressed rather than simply extruded, with the manufacturing process designed to increase media surface area and water contact time.
UltraWater Disc Technology
One of UltraWater's most distinctive components is its proprietary disc technology. A reticulated foam is impregnated with three different NSF-certified filtration media designed for additional heavy-metal and organic-contaminant reduction, including difficult contaminants such as arsenic.

Optional .01-Micron UF Filter for Well Water
For customers using untreated but potable well water, AlkaViva offers an optional .01-micron ultrafiltration (UF) filter for the right-side filter position of H2 Series ionizers.
This specialized 500-gallon filter uses .01-micron hollow-fiber membrane technology along with CaSO3 and carbon filtration to provide additional protection against waterborne contaminants, including bacteria and viruses, while also addressing heavy metals, chlorine and other contaminants.
This filter is intended for potable well water. If your well water has not been established as safe for drinking, the ionizer and its internal filters should not be relied upon to make unsafe water potable.

SmartElectrodes
AlkaViva's electrode design emphasizes efficiency rather than simply using more electrical power. The H2 Series uses platinum-coated titanium electrodes engineered to provide strong electrolysis performance without unnecessarily stressing the electrode coating.
AutoAdjust Power Supply
The AutoAdjust SMPS power system automatically regulates the amount of electrical power supplied to the water cell according to the selected water level and operating conditions.
This helps produce strong ionization efficiently instead of treating maximum wattage as the goal.
Automatic Continuous Cleaning Helps Maintain Performance

Mineral buildup on water-ionizer electrodes can gradually interfere with electrolysis. Because platinum-coated electrodes act as catalysts during ionization, keeping their surfaces clean is important for maintaining efficient performance.
AlkaViva's DARC II automatic reverse-cleaning system regularly reverses electrode polarity to discourage calcium accumulation rather than allowing a heavy layer of scale to build before cleaning occurs.
DARC II also improved on earlier AlkaViva cleaning designs by replacing metal-actuated solenoids that could themselves be susceptible to scaling with more scale-resistant ceramic components.

Filter life depends on water usage and water quality. The UltraWater filter and customary right-side pre-filter are each rated for approximately 1,000 gallons. The optional Fluoride Removal Filter and .01-micron UF Well-Water Filter are each rated for approximately 500 gallons.
Yes, but water hardness should always be considered when selecting and setting up any ionizer. UltraWater includes Scale Guard protection, and additional pretreatment may be recommended for unusually hard water or other challenging water conditions.
If your home uses a whole-house ion-exchange water softener or reverse-osmosis system, please contact us before installing your water ionizer. These systems can significantly change the mineral content and chemistry of the water, which can affect electrolysis and ionizer performance. We can help you determine the proper plumbing and filtration arrangement for your particular water and existing treatment system.
UltraWater is specifically designed to address chloramine. Its CaSO3 filtration media targets chlorine and chloramine, and chloramine reduction is one of the capabilities AlkaViva identifies for its UltraWater filtration.
Water ionization itself can provide some additional fluoride reduction in the alkaline water. Fluoride exists in water primarily as the negatively charged fluoride ion (F−). During electrolysis, negatively charged ions tend to migrate toward the positive electrode and the acidic-water stream, while positively charged mineral ions tend toward the alkaline-water stream. The amount of fluoride separated this way can vary with the strength of ionization, flow rate and chemistry of the source water, so I would not rely on electrolysis alone when fluoride removal is an important concern.
For customers who specifically want greater and more predictable fluoride reduction, I recommend AlkaViva's optional H2 Fluoride Removal Filter in the right-side filter position. It provides dedicated fluoride filtration before the water reaches the electrolysis chamber. The fluoride result reported in AlkaViva's laboratory testing was obtained with Fluoride Shield filtration media included.
No. UltraWater is designed to reduce contaminants while allowing naturally occurring dissolved minerals to remain in the water. Those minerals are also important for efficient electric ionization.
The countertop H2 water ionizers use electricity to perform electrolysis, but they can be unplugged and still provide excellent UltraWater-filtered water from the spout. They simply will not ionize the water while unplugged. The Delphi H2 is different because its electronic faucet requires electricity to operate, so water will not flow from the Delphi H2 faucet during a power outage.

With AlkaViva H2 water ionizers, the power settings for individual alkaline levels can be adjusted if needed. The procedure is explained in the H2 Water Ionizer User Manual .

AlkaViva H2 water ionizers automatically remember the last alkaline level selected. If a power outage or electrical event causes the ionizer to lose this memory setting, it can be reset.
- Enter programming mode by pressing and holding the ALK Level 1 and ALK Level 2 buttons simultaneously.
- Navigate through the menu using the ALK 1 button until you reach P-5.
- Exit programming mode by again pressing and holding ALK Level 1 and ALK Level 2 simultaneously.
Important: Do not change other programming settings unless instructed to do so.
The demonstration below uses a Vesta H2. For a Delphi H2, enter and exit programming mode by holding the Purified (PU) and Alkaline (ALK) buttons simultaneously.

- Turn off the water source.
- Open the flow-control knob to release pressure.
- Blow through the spout to help remove water remaining in the hoses.
- Remove the filters and allow them to air-dry.
- Place paper towels in the filter ports to absorb residual moisture.
- Remove the spout if appropriate, while leaving hoses attached where instructed.
- Roll and secure hoses carefully.
- Secure the electrical cord.
- Make sure the ionizer is clean and dry before covering it with a plastic bag.
- Place it inside its fitted product box.
- Place that box inside a larger, well-padded shipping box when shipping the ionizer.
